We have received a number of questions recently from students and parents about the differences between the exams offered by Cambridge and Oxford, specifically the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) and the Oxford Test of English (OTE). Hopefully, we can answer some of the most frequently asked questions here.

What is Cambridge B2 First (FCE)?

The FCE (First Certificate in English), now officially called B2 First, is an internationally recognised exam developed by Cambridge English. It is designed to assess upper-intermediate (B2) level English through four papers: Reading & Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

The FCE is taken at official exam centres on specific dates and is available in paper-based or digital format. It is widely accepted by universities, employers, and other organisations around the world.

What is the Oxford Test of English (OTE)?

The Oxford Test of English (OTE) is a newer, computer-based test developed by Oxford University Press. It tests Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, and each module can be taken separately. The Reading and Listening modules are adaptive: the difficulty of the questions changes according to the answers given.

The OTE covers CEFR levels A2–B2 and is shorter, taking about 2 hours, compared with approximately 3.5 hours for the FCE. The test offers flexible scheduling and is available year-round at approved centres.

What are the main differences between FCE and OTE?

  • Format: FCE has a fixed format; OTE is modular, with adaptive Reading and Listening sections.
  • Duration: FCE is longer; OTE is shorter.
  • Recognition: FCE is more widely recognised internationally.
  • Scoring: Both FCE and OTE provide a CEFR level. However, FCE is targeted at B2 level, whereas OTE adapts to assess levels from A2 to B2.
  • Preparation: More materials and courses are available for FCE.

Which is better: FCE or OTE?

It depends on the purpose. FCE may be the better choice if you need a widely recognised certificate for work or study, especially abroad. OTE is ideal for a shorter, flexible test to assess your level or show progress, particularly in an academic context or within institutions and universities that accept it.

If you need a certificate for a specific university, employer, or immigration application, always check which exams they accept before choosing.

It really depends on your current level and objectives.
